Founded by Cardinal Cisneros t the beginning of the XVI century, this was the first university town in the world.
The concept of ideal city, the city of God (Civitas Dei) was applied to this delightful location for the first time in human history, before spreading all over the world.

Particularly worthy of notice is the Paraninfo, the ancient Aula Magna, which served as a stable in the XIX century, while today it is the place where the prestigious Cervantes Award Ceremony takes place.
The Chapel of San Ildefonso,is also interesting , with the sepulcher of the Cardinal Cisneros.
In 1998, the university of Alcalà de Henares ewas designated a World Protected Heritage by UNESCO., for the quality of its buildings (dating back to the Golden Century), for its university system, and for being the home place of Miguel de Cervantes.
