The name of this beautiful square comes from its position in Madrid, being placed east of the Royal Palace.
The square was built under the reign of Josè Bonaparte, and in order to enlarge the surrounding area, many buildings were demolished.
The calle Bailén separates the Royal palace from Plaza de Oriente, but today, after the restructurations, the square and the palace look all the same.

The superb position of the squareand its vicinity not only to the Palace but also to the Royal Theatre and other monumental buildings of the pedestrian area make it a very pleasant site for promenades and relaxing moments.
King Ferdinand VI ordered the construction of sculptures representing all the kings of Spain which were supposed to decorate the palace cornice, but they ended each in a different place around the city, and one of those is this beautiful square.
