Enrique de Trastàmara ordered the construction of this monument in Rascafría, in the XV century.
The Benedictine monastery, as we know it today is the result of the sense of pity of the king, who had burnt the hermitage of Santa Maria del Paular during the French campaign, and which brought him to build a monastery on the same place when the old hermitage once stood.
Surrounded by the magnificent mountains Sierra de Guadarrama, El Paular is situated amidst the Lozoya valley, in the middle of a natural amphitheatre at1159 mt.
Of extraordinary beauty are the cloisters ,the church in gothic style with baroque motifs, and the fine marble high-altar,, the most valuable part of the monastery. The pala is a wooden piece, 9x12 mt, occupying the entire space at the bottom of the presbyter, divided in rectangular rooms covered with vaults.
