Its construction was ordered by Frederick IIto commemorate the victory of San Quintin,. and the building was used for multiple functions: as a palace, a church, a pantheonand as centre of arts and letters..
The project was started byJuan Bautista de Toledo, and after his death, it was followed by Juan Herrera, who imposed a more rigid style. The austere church stands out with its Greek cross plan, the big dome and the altar inside.
