The Cathedral of Santa Maria La Real de La Almudena is a spectacular building with a combination of different architectural styles.
Outside the construction is embellished with neoclassical motifs, whereas inside the magic atmosphere of the neo-gothic style and the neo-Romanic style of the crypt prevail. Almudena boasts the privilege of being the, first Spanish cathedral consecrated by the Pope, and the first that Pope John Paul II consecrated outside Rome. The official act took place on 15th June 1993, on the occasion of the fourth journey of John Paul II in Spain.
SThe cathedral is situated inside the city of Madrid. The main façade overlooks Armeria square, opposite the Royal Palace, and can be accessed from Calle Bailen or Calle Mayor.
Contrary to other cathedrals that are east-west oriented, Almudena follows an orientation from north toward south, as it was conceived as part of the Palazzo Reale complex .
